Mental Health Matters | A Guide To Taking Care Of Your Mind

Monday 11 July 2022

According to a recent study, mental health issues are increasing among Australians. In fact, 1 in 5 Australians will deal with a mental health issue, such as anxiety and depression in their lifetime.

Thankfully, the increase in diagnoses such as this means that we’re also carrying out more extensive research into mental health and wellness than ever before. This means that we’re better at identifying triggers and causes of mental health complaints, and the various ways in which we can manage these symptoms.

With that in mind, here are some top tips that you can use to take better care of your mind.

Let Go of Preconceived Notions Surrounding Mental Health

For decades, mental health issues were something that we simply did not speak about. As a result, this resulted in a lot of stigmas that left people feeling as though they had to suffer in silence - despite there being plenty of resources in place to support them. As such, to better take care of our minds, it's time that we start to break down this stigma. One way in which we can do this is by learning the biggest myths about mental health, so we can separate fact from fiction. We should also make an effort to speak more openly and honestly about how we are feeling to others. Not only will this encourage us to seek help when we need it, but it will also show others that they are not alone.

Consider Speaking to a Professional

While reaching out to friends and family members can be a great way to better process complex emotions, many people chose to keep these thoughts to themselves as they don’t want to worry others. In these cases, you may find it beneficial to speak to a therapist or psychologist. Not only will they be there to listen, but they’ll also provide you with a range of tools and coping techniques you can use in your daily life to control your thoughts and reduce the symptoms you are experiencing.

Change Your Environment

We often make the mistake of believing that as mental health is something ‘internal’, it is only influenced by external factors (i.e., our thoughts and feelings). However, your enviornment can impact your mental health. For example, if you spend a lot of time around people who are overly critical and negative, you may find your own mindset transforming for the worst too. As such, if you’re looking to take better care of your mind, try to change your environment.

Follow a Healthy Lifestyle

Our mental and physical health are closely linked, meaning that adopting a healthier lifestyle can boost your mental well-being considerably. For example, working out is good for more than just your physical body, it also promotes higher levels of confidence and self-esteem. Furthemore, when we exercise, our body produces higher levels of serotonin, which is often described as the ‘happiness hormone’. Additionally, when you’re following a balanced diet, you’re "setting yourself up for fewer mood fluctuations, an overall happier outlook and an improved ability to focus.
