Planning a multi-day road trip? It’s important to consider where you will be sleeping along the way. Below are just some of the different options to consider - and how to make each one work for you.
In Your Car
Sleeping in your car will save you money – however it’s definitely the least comfortable option. You can make ‘car camping’ a little cozier by bringing pillows and blankets. If your car has a large trunk, you may be able to take the back seats down and sleep here for a more comfortable night’s sleep, but this means sacrificing luggage space. As a result, most people sleep in the front seats, choosing to lean them back as far as they go.
You need to be careful where you park up for the night. Ideally, it should be somewhere safe and secluded. You can buy window screens to help provide privacy and block out light. Sleeping in your car may not be legal in some places so do your research.
Camping
You could consider taking a tent with you. A tent is likely to be more comfortable than your car, providing that you’ve packed floor mats and bedding and that you’ve got a decent tent. This could be a freestanding tent or one that is attached to the car (you can get tents that can sit on top of your car).
If you’re staying in campsites, you’ll need to book these campsites in advance. Wild camping could be a cheaper and more flexible option, but you’ll have to do without bathroom facilities or access to water (unless you’re able to camp near a public bathroom). Caravan/Campervan
A campervan or caravan could provide you with your own portable bed for getting a much better night’s sleep. Some caravans and campervans also feature kitchen facilities, bathroom facilities and various other amenities.
Caravans and campervans can be quite expensive to buy, but if you use them often enough they can be a worthy investment, helping to save you money on hotels and giving you the freedom to park up and sleep anywhere. Caravans are generally more affordable - by looking into second hand caravans for sale you can save a lot of money. Campervans are more expensive but also double up as a vehicle and are generally easier to drive. Be wary that when taking a campervan or caravan, you may not be able to take certain routes that you may be able to in a car.
Hotels/Hostels
Hotels and hostels will provide the best night’s sleep. They’re also the most expensive option - which is something you need to take into account.
Hostels are cheaper than hotels, but are more basic. You could end up sharing a room with strangers, so be prepared for this. That said, you’ll get an actual bed and access to bathroom facilities.
Hotels are the most luxurious option. If you’re going on a multi-day road trip and you’re on a tight budget, you may find it difficult to stay in a different hotel every night. That said, there are many cheaper motels out there with basic amenities that cater primarily to road trippers - if staying in a hotel room is important to you, these could be a good option.
