5 Ways to Enjoy Each Day

Saturday, 20 August 2016
Life can sometimes get out of hand. It's easy to lose site of the things in life that bring us joy and happiness. In the world of social media, instantaneous gratification enables us to see the good in our friends and families lives. Very rarely do people post a normal day or when they're having a difficult day. Often those who do are ridiculed for exhibiting attention seeking behaviours. So with the constant stream of happiness, love, and extreme, it is understandable that often we feel inadequate or that we're not living up to our full potential. But that doesn't have to be the way we live each day. Here are 5 easy ways to help enjoy each day:

Start Your Morning in a Positive Way
For some this may mean blasting a guilty pleasure song, for others going for a run. It is very important to start each day in a positive manner. I frequently try to get up early enough to start my day with a session at the gym. But life occasionally gets in the way. Even if you're rushed for time, try to set aside at least 5 minutes in your morning routine for some you time. If I'm running late (let's be honest, that's most days as I'm not a morning person), I try to spend my train ride reading a book or my morning drive listening to an audiobook. This helps relax me and get ready to take on the day.

Appreciate the Little Things
I adore a great sunset.
Let's be honest, sometimes one simply does not have enough money or the time to travel the world. With the accessibility of social media, it is easy to envy friends and family. That is why it is so important to appreciate the little beauties that can be found in everyday life. A beautiful sunset, a cute little puppy walking on the street, fresh dew on the grass in the morning, a street performer playing a classic. All beautiful aspects of life that can often be overlooked with a busy schedule. Take time to try and be present at least once a day.

Spontaneous Dance Parties
Dancing my heart out.
Sometimes you just need to tap into your inner child and let it all out. Spend a good chunk of your commute in your car? Blast your favourite song and dance along. Heck, this is the time for you to show off your awesome singing skills as well. By allowing yourself to act like a younger version of yourself, you will in turn start to relax thus allowing you to enjoy your day. If dancing or singing isn't really your enchilada, replace this with spontaneous walks, yoga poses, or chats with friends. Something that makes you happy.

Make Time for Things You Enjoy
Puppy cuddles are life.
Whether it's exercising, reading, or taking a bubble bath, it is important to make time for things you enjoy. Whatever it is that makes you happy, utilise this to SLOW DOWN! We live in a fast-paced world where all the information we need is literally at our finger tips. We've become so conditioned to instantaneous gratification, we often forget how to slow down and enjoy life. Take short breaks out of each day to do something you enjoy will vastly improve your mental health and outlook on life.

Utilise a Self-Care Plan

When you working in the mental health field, self-care plans are something that are constantly discussed. They are a way to help leave work at work and allow you to some time in your week to focus on yourself. A self-care plan will incorporate your physical, psychological, professional, emotional, and spiritual balance. By mapping out a self-care plan, you can ensure that all aspects of your life remained balanced. If you work in an incredibly stressful field (like I do), self-care plans can help prevent burnout, keep you grounded, and stop you from wanting to go ninja on every person who walks through your business doors.

The world is a stressful place, why make it even more so? Taking time for yourself and allowing time to relax will help make life more enjoyable. When we allow ourselves to take a step back from the fast paced, instant gratification that is this technology filled life, and slow down to smell the roses or take in the a gorgeous sunset, we can help our minds go back to a simpler time.
